Massachusetts Veteran Funeral Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. What is your veteran funeral services cost to bury at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne or a Massachusetts veteran’s cemetery?

A. Casper Funeral & Cremation Services provides a low-cost $2,985.00 Direct Massachusetts Veteran’s Funeral with no extra charges.

Q. Who is eligible to be buried in the Massachusetts National Cemetery or a Massachusetts veteran’s cemetery?

A. All Massachusetts veterans are entitled to burial in a national cemetery or a state veteran’s cemetery. A spouse and dependants of an eligible veteran are entitled to burial in a national cemetery even if the veteran is not buried there. Not eligible are divorced spouses, adult children, parents, siblings and others—even if they are dependants and those with a dishonorable discharge.

Q. What funeral benefits are a veteran entitled to when buried in a national cemetery or a state veteran’s cemetery?

A. The veteran is entitled to receive a grave marker (regardless of the cemetery) and a flag. Military honors or a funeral honor guard may be available from nearby military installations or veterans groups.
There will be no charges for opening or closing the grave, a vault or liner, or setting the marker in a national cemetery. If the choice is a state veteran’s cemetery, there is no charge for the veteran but a small fee for the spouse of the veteran. National cemeteries provide space for both body burial and cremated remains.Burials in the Massachusetts National Cemetery are not conducted on weekends or holidays.

Q. Can a national cemetery grave be reserved ahead of time?

A. You may not reserve space in a national cemetery ahead of time; arrangements are made only at the time of death.

Q. As for Federal VA funeral benefits, who is eligible for these benefits?

The VA Burial Benefits allowance of $300 may be available to eligible veterans. These benefits are paid only if the deceased veteran meets one of three conditions:

  • The veteran must die in a VA facility.
  • The veteran must be receiving a pension from the military.
  • The veteran must be receiving disability from the military.

If the deceased veteran doesn’t meet one of these three conditions, then there is no VA burial allowance awarded. However, these three federal eligibility conditions do not prevent a veteran from being buried in a national or state veterans cemetery.
